Psychologists work with children and adults in the areas of behaviour and mental health. Psychologists study human behaviour in their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees before undertaking supervised experience and gaining registration. Some psychologists are endorsed as specialists in their area because of their additional post-graduate training.

Psychologists assist people to cope with everyday problems such as stress, parenting, child development, relationship difficulties, and mood disorders. They help people to develop the skills they need to function better and to prevent ongoing problems. Unlike doctors and psychiatrists, psychologists cannot prescribe medication. Their treatments are based on changing behaviour and emotional responses by learning coping skills. There is a quite a lot evidence showing that psychological treatments have long term benefits and are cost effective.
